The Black Widow Spider

Known for their venomous bite, black widow spiders have shiny black bodies with a red hourglass shape on their underside. When they stretch out their legs, they are about 1.5 inches wide. The female’s bite is venomous, but the male spiders aren’t dangerous to humans. These spiders like to hide in dark spaces like basements, crawl spaces, garages, and woodpiles.

Important Note: If you think you have been bitten by a black widow spider, please see a doctor right away. The venom can cause serious illness and even death.

Here are several signs that you might have been bitten by a black widow spider:

Brown Widow

Less dangerous than the black widow, the brown widow has a painful bite, but its venom is not as strong. Instead of biting everything they can, brown widows like to sit quietly on their webs. Colors can be very different from spider to spider, but the colors may be mottled or marbled, and they are not shiny black. They have an hourglass shape on their bellies (usually orange). Brown widows eat insects or anything else that they catch in their webs.

The Wolf Spider

Wolf spiders might look scary, but they are pretty harmless. As adults, they can grow up to 1.4 inches long and are a dark brown or black color with gray, yellow, or cream markings. If you don’t handle them directly or make them feel threatened, they won’t bite. The rare wolf spider bite also causes only mild symptoms.

Brown Recluse

The brown recluse is about the size of a quarter when it stretches its legs. It has a small violin-shaped body and doesn’t look dangerous, but its bite can be serious. Most of the time, brown recluse bites heal quickly, but they can cause skin problems, other serious reactions, and even death in people who are sick or have weak immune systems.
